The Shakesby TT range of water softeners operate on an ion exchange principle, the water passes through a resin bed and calcium ions are exchanged for sodium ions. After a period of time the resin becomes saturated with calcium ions and must be regenerated by exposing the bed to a brine solution.
Backwashing and regeneration (brine injection) are carried out completely automatically and initiation of the process can either be on a fixed time basis (i.e. the unit regenerates after a preset time interval regardless of the amount of water used) or a meter controlled basis whereby a water meter measures the volume of water used and a small micro processor calculates the regeneration time and initiates the process when necessary.
Fixed time operation is fine for a normal domestic property where the volume of water used each week is fairly constant.
Where water usage is variable (e.g. groups of holiday cottages, caravan sites etc) a meter controlled system is preferable.
The TT1054 softener is capable of treating a flow rate of around 6 gallons per minute which is ample for a normal domestic property.
Larger models (and duplex systems) are available for hotels, campsites and industrial applications.
The TT1054 is of industrial quality design and build and should not be confused with the cheaper under sink ‘waste bin style’ domestic softeners, the main advantages being:-

The
larger resin volume (40 litres) enables the unit to operate at a much
lower salt level of 80 grams per litre and salt consumption is therefore
greatly reduced.

For ease of installation we strongly recommend that the softener is connected to the water supply pipe by a bypass valve. This is simply connected into the existing water pipe and diverts the water through the softener via flexible hoses. It also allows the system to be bypassed in an emergency.
It is advisable to retain
an unsoftened supply for drinking water.
